The exciting musical developments of the last decades are reflected in the principal-study programme for percussionists. Especially where 'mallets' are concerned, melodic instruments, a whole new and unique generation of percussionists is now presenting itself. Marimba and vibraphone players can justly be called specialists. Non-western percussion instruments have permeated classical music on a large scale.
These developments have inspired many contemporary composers to write music for percussion that is more technically demanding and versatile than ever before. The study programme is designed to allow students to study intensively with all principal-study teachers. The teachers of this section are active in many fields: the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Radio Orchestras, the Netherlands Wind Ensemble, the Ives Ensemble and as soloists. In addition, specialists regularly act as guest teachers.
