A combination of artistic education and theoretical reflection is at the core of the principal subject of Theory of Music, in the bachelor programme as well as the Advanced Study. During the bachelor programme the training aims to provide thorough knowledge, skills and insights in the field of analysis, notation and literature from all periods. In this stage the principal subject includes the subjects of analysis and history of early music, classical-romantic music and twentieth-century/contemporary music; notation in the various periods: counterpoint, harmony, twentieth-century techniques; aesthetics of music; instrumentation and score playing.
The Advanced Study offers two specialisations: a training for Theory of Music teacher at a conservatory or university, and a training for researcher in the field of music theory. The latter specialisation trains for the degree of Master of Arts in Music Theory, and is organised in co-operation with the Musicology faculty of the University of Amsterdam.
