Violin

With 150 students the string faculty plays a prominent part at the CvA. The violin section is part of a long tradition that began with the famous Hungarian pedagogue Oskar Back, who studied with Eugène Ysaÿe. Carl Flesch has also been a teacher at the institute. Herman Krebbers and Davina van Wely followed in Oskar Back's footsteps and have trained renowned students for years.

The string faculty organises masterclasses given by its own teaching staff and by internationally renowned guest teachers, such as Thomas Brandis, Philippe Graffin, Yuzuko Horigome, Isabelle van Keulen, Rudolf Koelman, Herman Krebbers, Mark Lubotsky, Rachel Podger, Silvia Rosenberg and Gerhard Schulz. Orchestral training is a regular part of the curriculum. Students are taking part in a wide variety of orchestral and ensemble projects as well as special string projects.

There are numerous links with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. Master's degree students can audition for the Orchestra Academy, where they will receive a special training by orchestra members and participate in a number of concerts.

Additionally, there are workshops given by well-known violin- and bowmakers, such as Johan Jacobs and Andreas Grütter.
