Supplementary Programmes in Music Education

The supplementary degree programme in music education is intended for students who have already completed an instrumental or vocal degree programme in music. The syllabus of this course of study is a compilation of the syllabus taught in years 1-4 of the regular Bachelor of Music in Education course. There is one day of lessons per week. The entrance examination is necessary for students to obtain insight into their potential. During an interview candidates may discuss their personal expectations and wishes.

Study load
Given the number of hours of instruction, the internship (optional, see below) and the amount of private study (see below) required, students should count on at least 2-2.5 days of study per week.

Weekly instruction

1. Didactic skills
Literature, methodology, methodological and didactic skills. Students may focus on primary or secondary education, according to their wishes. 2 hours per week.

2. Educational subjects
Music didactics, pedagogy, developmental and educational psychology. 1 hour per week.

3. Internship
Students will observe in various educational situations and teach.

4. Personal reflection
Students will reflect on events from the professional practice (work or internship). 1 hour per week.

5. Piano or Guitar Practicum
The piano practicum (vocal accompanying) is given to students who focus on secondary education. The guitar practicum (vocal accompanying) is given to students who focus on primary education. One hour per week.

6. Arranging/composition
The subject of arranging is given alternating with the piano practicum. Students who take guitar practicum will learn how to compose and arrange children's songs. One hour per week.

7. Voice
Throughout the first or second year of study, students will receive voice lessons each week. 30 minutes per week.

8. Popular-Music Practicum
Throughout the first or second year of study, students will learn how to form and coach a pop band. One hour per week.

Private study
In addition to the hours of instruction, students will read literature on the subject of didactic skills, do assignments, write reports and prepare exams.

Extra subjects
In addition to the hours of instruction and private study, students may take subjects in the field of:
* choral conducting + choral practicum, ensemble-conducting or band instruction
* world music ensembles
* music, playing and movement
* history of jazz and popular music or history of classical music
* introduction to world music
* subject from the classical or jazz electives programmes
