In co-operation with the Muziekschool Amsterdam (MSA) the Conservatorium van Amsterdam has set up the Junior Jazz College, an education programme to prepare young and gifted jazz musicians for the Conservatory entrance examination. This programme gives prospective students the opportunity to learn to play together, to learn to play solos, to acquaint themselves with the jazz repertoire and to gain stage experience. The education programme offers principal private lessons for the instruments trumpet, trombone, saxophone, piano, voice, bass, guitar and drums. In addition to this there are group lessons ear training and theory.
The Muziekschool ensembles are conducted by Peter Guidi: five jazz workshops and two big bands for different age groups. The Jazz Juniors (10-13 years), The Jazz Generation (13-15 years), Jazz Workshop I, II and III, The Jazzfocus Big Band and The Jazzmania Big Band (from 15 years). These ensembles are connected by level; the student can start with The Jazz Juniors or The Jazz Generation and end with Jazz Workshop III or Jazzmania Big Band. Students who have reached this level, should have sufficient theoretical knowledge and practical experience to pass the entrance examination.
The workshop bands perform regularly at several well-known venues in The Netherlands, (e.g. Bimhuis, the Vondelpark, Paradiso, De Meervaart), at competitions and festivals (e.g. North Sea Jazz Festival) and for radio and television broadcasts (Tros Sesjun).
